1

Life in Paradise

Allah honored Adam by placing him in Paradise (Jannah), a place of eternal bliss and comfort. Adam could enjoy all the blessings of Paradise freely - its fruits, its beauty, and its peace. He had everything he could desire, yet Allah had a greater plan for humanity that would unfold through a test.

Key Point

Adam was honored to live in Paradise with access to all its blessings.

Quran

Surah An-Nisa (4:1)

O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women.

The creation of Hawwa from Adam

3

The Creation of Hawwa (Eve)

Allah created Hawwa (Eve) from Adam to be his companion and wife. She was created from his rib, signifying that she was to be close to his heart - not from his head to be above him, nor from his feet to be below him, but from his side to be his equal partner. Together, they completed each other.

Key Point

Hawwa was created from Adam's rib to be his equal companion.

Vocabulary

Key Terms

حواء|Hawwa

Eve

The first woman and wife of Adam. Her name comes from the Arabic word for 'living' because she is the mother of all humanity.

Example: Hawwa and Adam were the parents of all human beings.

إبليس|Iblees

Satan / The Devil

The jinn who refused to prostrate to Adam out of arrogance. He was cast out of Allah's mercy and vowed to mislead humanity.

Example: Iblees used deception and false promises to mislead Adam and Hawwa.

شجرة|Shajarah

Tree

The forbidden tree in Paradise that Adam and Hawwa were commanded not to approach.

Example: Allah said: 'Do not approach this Shajarah or you will be among the wrongdoers.'

The Wisdom of Partnership

Allah did not leave Adam alone in Paradise. He created Hawwa to be his companion, showing that humans are created to live in pairs, supporting and completing each other. This partnership is one of Allah's blessings to humanity.

6

The Forbidden Tree

Allah gave Adam and Hawwa one simple command: do not approach a certain tree. They were free to enjoy everything else in Paradise - an abundance of blessings with just one restriction. This was a test of obedience and trust. Allah warned them that if they ate from this tree, they would be among the wrongdoers.

Key Point

Only one tree was forbidden - a test of obedience to Allah.

Quran

Surah Al-Baqarah (2:35)

Wa qulnaa yaa Aadamus-kun anta wa zawjukal-jannata wa kulaa minhaa raghadan haythu shi'tumaa wa laa taqrabaa haathihish-shajarata fatakoonaa minath-thaalimeen

And We said, 'O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise and eat therefrom in [ease and] abundance from wherever you will. But do not approach this tree, lest you be among the wrongdoers.'

The Whispers of Shaytan

Iblees (Satan), who had been cast out of Allah's mercy for refusing to prostrate to Adam, was determined to lead Adam astray. He whispered to Adam and Hawwa, falsely swearing that the tree would give them eternal life or make them angels. He deceived them with lies and false promises, presenting evil as something good.

Key Point

Shaytan used deception and false promises to mislead Adam and Hawwa.

Quran

Surah Al-A'raf (7:20-21)

Fawaswasa lahumash-shaytaanu liyubdiya lahumaa maa wooriya 'anhumaa min saw'aatihimaa wa qaala maa nahaakumaa rabbukumaa 'an haathihish-shajarati illaa an takoonaa malakaini aw takoonaa minal-khaalideen. Wa qaasamahumaa innee lakumaa laminan-naasiheen.

But Satan whispered to them to make apparent to them that which was concealed from them of their private parts. He said, 'Your Lord did not forbid you this tree except that you become angels or become of the immortal.' And he swore to them, 'Indeed, I am to you a sincere adviser.'

Shaytan's deceptive approach

The Methods of Shaytan

Notice how Shaytan operates: he makes sin seem attractive, uses false oaths, and presents himself as a well-wisher. He never openly says 'disobey Allah.' Instead, he disguises disobedience as something beneficial. This is how he continues to deceive humanity today.

Reflection

Pause & Ponder

How does Shaytan's deception of Adam and Hawwa relate to temptations we face today?

  • What 'forbidden trees' exist in modern life that seem attractive but lead to harm?
  • How can we recognize and resist Shaytan's whispers in our daily lives?
