Prophet Muhammad was born on Monday, the 12th of Rabi' al-Awwal (though some narrations mention the 9th), in the Year of the Elephant (570 CE). His mother, Aminah, reported seeing a light emanate from her during pregnancy that illuminated the castles of Syria. As was the custom among noble Arab families, baby Muhammad was sent to the desert to be nursed by Halimah Sa'diyyah of the Banu Sa'd tribe, where he would learn pure Arabic and grow strong in the healthy desert environment.

Key Point

Halimah Sa'diyyah became his wet nurse in the desert.

The Desert Tradition

Sending children to be raised by Bedouin wet nurses was common among noble Makkan families. The desert environment was believed to promote good health, and children would learn the purest form of Arabic. The Prophet spent his early years with Halimah's family in the desert.
